Fashion as a stage for jewellery

Interview with stylist Olesya Schuler: How to perfectly combine jewelry and fashion

What effect does successful jewelry styling have on the entire outfit?

Olesya Schuler: Often it is our jewelry, not our outfit, that shows who we really are. In addition, jewelry offers the perfect opportunity to change the look with minimal effort. Women can wear their basic wardrobe every day and always look different thanks to the unusual and colorful details - I'm talking about the combination with jewelry, but also with bags and shoes.

When it comes to styling, does fashion always come first and then jewelry or can it sometimes be the other way around?

For most people, fashion comes first and then jewelry. That's a shame. Because for real jewelry fans, it's the other way around. I think it's great to think about jewelry first for a special occasion and THEN choose an outfit to go with it. Just try it out - for example, the next time you go to a restaurant or a big party.

Which look shows off the jewelry best?

In fact, jewelry is best presented with a “simple look,” that is, with plain fashion that consists mainly of basics.

Are there exceptions – for example, can jewelry be styled with a lavish ruffled blouse?

Yes, for example, if the blouse and the jewelry are from different fashion styles. The dress is romantic and the necklace is more rock-style: that can look great! I always recommend thinking about three things when putting together an outfit: 1. It should suit the look, 2. the occasion (dinner, office, party, etc.) and 3. the outfit.

Which neckline goes with which chain?

Ideally, necklaces and chokers should "fill" the neckline and follow its shape. Therefore, the jewelry for a round neckline should have the right shape and no corners or edges. The same tactic works for closed necklines, but the necklace should not harmoniously fill the neckline, but rather the background that the garment forms.

To what extent do fashion colours and decorative colours need to be coordinated with each other?

When choosing jewelry for a look, the colors of the wardrobe are of course also taken into account. Jewelry can either harmonize with these colors or create a contrast. In this case, please consider the following:

  • blue jewelry goes well with black and blue-green clothing
  • purple jewelry complements the yellow outfit perfectly
  • grey-blue stones are perfectly combined with pastel outfits
  • white pearls and amber go well with black business attire
  • white gold goes well with purple and blue outfits
  • Yellow gold is suitable for clothes in black, brown and pastel tones
  • Rose gold usually harmonizes well with delicate pastel tones

It is generally recommended to match jewelry with accessories, lipstick or nail polish color.

Does the style always have to harmonize or can there also be breaks?

I always say "It's good to know the rules so you can break them." Remember the following guidelines:

  • You can complement everyday clothes with silver or simple gold jewelry as well as with high-quality jewelry and even unusual plastic jewelry.
  • If you don't have a very good sense of style, you shouldn't overdo the colors: multi-colored outfits generally require more restrained jewelry and vice versa.
  • When combining different pieces of jewelry, think about the “common denominator”: Even the most diverse jewelry accessories should have something in common (e.g. color, material, style) and match your clothing and your type.

How important are jewelry classifiers for styling?

They are like the essential basic pieces of a wardrobe.

What are the current styling trends?

  • Layering with chains and ring stacking
  • Combine colours - e.g. rose & white gold
  • asymmetry
  • Colorful Gemstones for Engagement Rings

What is a styling no-go for you?

Wearing too many of the season's must-haves together.

Your personal favorite look with jewelry?

White t-shirt, jeans, loafers, blazer + statement earrings.

Thank you very much for the conversation and the good tips!
